A Guide to Brixham

Brixham is a popular seaside town on the South Devon Coast. Located on the South side of TorBay, It retains a certain Victorian charm with its cobbled streets and colour washed houses. Brixham began life as a fishing village and grew to become on of the largest on the South coast. However today fishing takes second place to tourism. Although still a fishing port, its fleet has been drastically reduced.

The Harbour

Life in Brixham centres around the harbour. Here you will find a great selection of cafes, restaurants and gift shops all surrounding the port. If you love seafood then this is one town you should visit as there are seafood restaurants aplenty.

Walk down the cobbled streets of Brixham towards the harbour and the view is dominated by the Golden Hind. This is a full size replica of Sir Francis Drakes ship and a popular tourist destination for young and old alike. It tells the story of Drakes circumnavigation of the world as he plundered his way from country to country. A real pirates adventure and an interactive museum, its a great place to spend a few hours. Make sure, however, they don’t make you walk the plank!

As this is still an active fishing port you can watch the fishermen unload their catch and send it to the nearby Brixham Fish Market. An interesting activity especially for those who haven’t seen fisherman in action before.

The Golden Hind Museum.

Although mentioned above, this is the centrepiece of Brixham harbour and a must visit activity for all who visit Brixham.

Breakwater Beach

Situated right next to the Harbour and composed of shingle Breakwater beach is a great place to enjoy the sunnier days. Here you can go rock pooling with the kids and even swim in the calm waters. It is a firm favourite for scuba divers, however, as there is plenty of marine life to see under water.

Shoalstone Pool

In addition to swimming in the sea you can also try Shoalstone pool. It is a 50m saltwater pool open during the summer months and is an iconic location in Brixham. Being one of he the few remaining saltwater pools in the country. It is open daily from May to September and is a great place to relax and soak up the rays.
